Part 1 · Step 1

Connect your device

Put your production computer and your phone or tablet on the same network. We recommend connecting through PaneLive Companion, the desktop app that pairs your devices.

  1. 01

    Install PaneLive Companion

Download PaneLive Companion for your production computer and install it with the Installation manual. Start it, connect it to your production software and create a pairing QR code.

  2. 02

    Scan the QR code

In PaneLive, open Settings → Connection Profiles, add a connection and choose your production software with its PaneLive Companion method. Tap SCAN PAIRING QR, allow camera access if asked, scan the code and save the profile. Each QR code works once, so create a fresh one if you need to try again.

  3. 03

    Choose your role

As a Viewer you can watch the production. To control it, request Operator in the PaneLive Companion role section in Settings, and approve it in PaneLive Companion.

  4. 04

    Name the device

Give the device a name your crew will recognize under Client Name in Settings. In PaneLive Companion, Identify shows that name and a short code on the device, so you always know which screen is which.

Prefer a direct connection? In PaneLive, add a profile, choose the direct method for your production software, enter the address and password it shows, then save and connect. Save profiles for your studios in PaneLive Pro. If a control is grey, check your role, Studio Mode, your media and output setup, and the connection.

Part 1 · Step 2

Choose a view

Pick the view that suits this device’s job. The Dashboard is a good place to start. For a crew, pair each phone or tablet and give it its own view: Composition for the switcher, Recording for the outputs, the Dashboard for the producer.

Everyday tools

That’s it: your device is connected. Your OBS Studio, vMix or Streamlabs guide covers the details for your software. The topics below explain the tools you will use during a show. Jump to the one you need:

Tip

Try a long press

Some of PaneLive’s handiest features have no button of their own. Press and hold, and they appear. Here are the ones worth knowing:

  • Scene: see its screenshot, or hide it from your list.
  • Source: see its screenshot, give it your own color, or hide it from your list.
  • Audio fader: open the settings for that track.
  • Preview picture: start a ten-second countdown that takes Preview live.
  • Program picture: start recording, streaming or both after a ten-second countdown.
  • Running countdown: cancel it before GO.
  • Lock icon on the Composition deck: unlock the record and stream buttons, which start out locked.
  • Gauge in the Performance view: pick it up and move it to another spot.

Everyday tools

Find your way around the views

Rotate between portrait and landscape. In landscape, the Dashboard keeps navigation beside the split content area. With PaneLive video in OBS Studio or vMix, tap the fullscreen icon to expand or collapse controls and meters, adjust the Studio Preview PiP, and turn on composition guides in preferences.

In the Recording deck’s scene solo view, pick a scene for Preview, then run a transition or a countdown. PaneLive confirms the Preview selection before taking it further. The audio solo view brings the track controls to the front.

Everyday tools

Scenes and sources

Check the panel heading before you tap: Preview, Program and Monitored Scene each do something different. Picking in Preview sets up the next scene, picking in Program changes the live scene, and picking a monitored scene only changes what you see on this device.

Tap a source or layer’s visibility control to show or hide it, and wait for the new state to appear. With PaneLive Companion, production controls need the Operator role. Long-press a scene or source to see its screenshot without changing anything live. For a source, the same dialog lets you pick a color or hide it from your list.

Everyday tools

Audio

Open a track’s controls, move the fader or mute it, and watch the result confirm. Solo, Master volume and monitoring mode appear when your production software offers them. The fader shows the level you set, while the meter shows the live signal. Live meters come from OBS Studio and vMix, and Streamlabs Desktop gives you faders and mute.

To listen along in PaneLive Pro, turn on monitoring in Audio settings, choose a comfortable local playback gain and use the headphone-only option if you like. Local gain only changes what this device hears, so the production mix stays as it is. If you hear nothing, check the producer’s monitor mix first.

Everyday tools

Recording and streaming

Tap record or stream to start. With hold protection on, keep holding until it completes. Check that the output is running and the recording time is counting; pause and resume appear when they are available. At the end, stop the output and check that it has stopped. If a confirmation dialog appears, confirm the stop there.

With vMix, PaneLive can start and stop each stream target on its own. OBS Studio and Streamlabs Desktop use one stream button for all destinations, and Streamlabs Desktop shows each destination’s name for reference. Set up destinations and credentials on the production computer.

Everyday tools

Build a shortcut deck

Open Hotkeys. PaneLive picks up the actions already assigned in your production software, and some connections let you add your own keys. Customize labels, icons, layout and long-tap protection. After you change assignments in your production software, refresh or reopen the deck.

OBS Studio offers its hotkeys, vMix offers Web Controller shortcuts and key commands, and Streamlabs Desktop offers its configured general actions. If the deck is empty, assign shortcuts in your production software first.

Voice Cues (PaneLive Pro)

Run the show by voice. Every command starts with the wake word Penny, for example “Penny! Record Countdown”. PaneLive listens on the device itself.

  1. 01

    Enable Voice Cues

Open Settings → Voice Cues. Enable the feature and grant microphone permission when requested.

  2. 02

    Calibrate

Follow the on-device recognition setup. Calibrate studio silence and the Penny wake word, record pronunciation samples, and rehearse before you let it listen during a show.

  3. 03

    Use fixed commands

Use the built-in commands to start recording or streaming, pick scenes or run transitions. Commands for individual stream destinations depend on your production software. The app shows the full command list.

  4. 04

    Create macros

For a sequence you repeat, create a macro, give it a spoken cue, choose whether it applies everywhere or to one production project, and add actions and waits in order. Use import and export to move macros between devices.

  5. 05

    Check the feedback

PaneLive tells you whether a command ran, changed nothing or failed. If it did not run, check the production state before you say the cue again, for example after switching projects.

Penny! Record Countdown, Penny! Stream Countdown and Penny! Transition Countdown start a ten-second countdown right away. Voice Cues pause while a tally light or the teleprompter is on screen.

Countdowns (PaneLive Pro)

Take Preview to Program: in studio mode, long-press the Preview window or PiP, then choose Start in “Go to program in 10 seconds.” At GO, your device runs the default studio transition.

Start outputs: when recording is stopped, long-press Program. Select Recording, Streaming or both in “Start outputs in 10 seconds,” check your selection, then tap Start.

To cancel before GO, hold the running counter. Other devices paired with the same PaneLive Companion connection can see the countdown too, and holding it there just closes it on that device. After GO, check that the production has switched or started.

Tally lights

Turn this device into a light that shows when you are live. Tally Lights come with PaneLive.

  1. 01

    Add a tally light

Open Settings → Tally Lights → Add tally light. Give it a descriptive name and select Flood, Dot, Bar or Operator.

  2. 02

    Choose a binding

Choose Scene to follow selected scenes, Door to show whether you are recording or streaming, or All to follow Program. Flood and Bar can also follow individual sources.

  3. 03

    Pick the identities

Choose the scenes or sources to watch. You can pick several. Hidden sources stay in the list, and they light the tally once they and their parent scenes are visible.

  4. 04

    Set the display options

Depending on the mode, adjust labels, brightness, night and low-power behavior, standby, secondary text, haptics, mounting flip, Dot size and position, or the timer.

  5. 05

    Save and start

Save tally setups for your studio positions. Each device runs one tally light at a time. Open the display’s details to edit it or to Stop tally light. Closing the details keeps the tally running.

A scene tally lights up when its scene is in Program, even if it is in Preview at the same time. The label tells you what is happening: PROGRAM, RECORD, ON AIR, or REC + ON AIR when you record and stream at once. A scene that is only in Preview shows STANDBY. Door follows your outputs: RECORD while recording (RECORDING in the Flood style), ON AIR while streaming and REC + ON AIR for both. You can replace any label with your own. Bar can show a screenshot of the matching scene. If a scene or source goes missing or the connection drops, the tally tells you which one it is.

Choose your colors. By default, PaneLive uses its own scheme: Program glows orange while nothing is recording or streaming, and turns red the moment you record or stream. That way everyone can tell a rehearsal from the real thing at a glance. Prefer the broadcast standard? Turn on Professional tally convention at the top of the Tally Lights settings. Program is then always red and labeled PROGRAM, with recording and streaming shown separately. Preview is green in both schemes, and the switch applies to every tally light on the device.

Everyday tools

Themes and preferences

In User Interface settings, choose your theme, haptics, monitor-only mode, scene and source layout, guides, fullscreen controls and what reopens at startup. In Video settings, choose the Program and Preview rates that suit your network.

The theme catalog includes Base, Stardust, Carbon/Platinum, Candy Licorice/Marshmallow, Studio Black/Champagne, Switcher and Mint, plus Prototype.
